Beaufort County Still Haunted by Dr. Jeff Moss

Superintendent Jeff Moss

Dr. Jeff Moss continues to haunt the Beaufort County taxpayers.  His gargantuan building plan led to incredible amounts of debt, voted over the objection of conservative county commissioners back in 2004 and 2005.  This has led to a glut of facility space that Beaufort County simply cannot afford to maintain.  The schools there are 27.8% over-capacity of what ADM justifies.  See the link below for the full story.

One can only wonder if a similar fate awaits Lee County schools.  Fortunately, it seems our commissioners are a little more vigilant here and alert to Moss’ tricks.  They and the county manager scrutinized Moss and the BOE’s attempt last year to seek approval in the capital budget for $10M in elementary school expansions in FY 12-13, $5M for West and East Lee upgrades in 11-12 and 12-13, and a whopping $15.7M for building a new elementary school in FY 15-16.  None of these items were justified by ADM or other rationale.  All of these items DEFERRED to FY 13-14 or beyond by commissioners.  The unneeded new elementary school was pushed into the out years beyond FY 15-16.

Just thought you should know some of our elected and appointed leaders in Lee County continue to watch out for our taxpayers.  To be sure, our beloved superintendent requires close monitoring and, so far, it seems he’s being kept in check.  Let us hope that trend continues into this budget year.  The recent Evergreen financial review of our school system revealed a number of areas in which savings can be realized.  Maybe we will see some of those savings this next fiscal year.

About Thomas Jefferson

3rd President and Founding Father of the U.S. I conceived and promoted the country's system of public education in the early 19th Century. I am often misunderstood about my the "wall of separation" term and letter to the Danbury Baptist Association, which unfortunately has come to be interpreted as my suggesting separation of God and the Holy Trinity from all matters of state. I am a Christian, saved by the blood of Jesus Christ and I owe Him my salvation. I pray for this great country, that it remain strong, independent and Christian!

In regards to Superintendent Jeff Moss, his decision making is being called into question once again. Check out what’s happening over at West Lee Middle School with Principal Melvin Marshall. He must have something good over Dr. Moss, because anyone else who has destroyed a school culture as Mr. Marshall has would have been fired numerous times over already. You should see the NC Working Conditions Survey comparing his first year to the current year, it’s an unmitigated disaster. Whereas, West Lee used to be a school that teachers wanted to work at and parents wanted their kids to go, now it’s a mad scramble to transfer and get away from the dictatorial leadership style of Mr. Marshall. Other principals have been demoted and moved to other positions for such poor leadership, but Dr. Moss and Mr. Marshall just keep plugging along together, despite decreasing test scores and horrible morale. If you want to add another fishy addendum to the ever increasing resume of Dr. Moss, check out the survey results and ask yourself, “Why is this man protecting Mr. Marshall?”

And again we see the “leadership” of Jeff Moss in his latest round of administration shuffling…. more dictators (seemingly beholden to Moss, or vice versa), with true visionaries being pushed to the edges to languish in oblivion….

  3. Scott Bradley says:

Seems Jeffery Moss should have the ability to hold his tongue when most prudent. His emotions
got the best of him at the last meeting, Expletives in the company of adolescents is not what we need in leadership. Shame, shame Dr. Moss.
