Goodbye Renee, Hello Howard!

Just when I thought things were about to settle down in central NC, the political landscape looks like it is about to make a major change.  For the next ten years or longer there’s a good possibility most Lee Countians will be moved to the NC 6th Congressional District, presently represented by Republican Howard Coble.  Although not obvious from the map below, about 720 registered voters in northeast Lee County will be sliced into the NC 4th District (represented by Democrat David Price).  Here’s the proposed new district configurations now on the table:

Proposed re-districting of NC Congressional Districts.

The NC General Assembly will be deliberating these proposed boundaries later this month in Raleigh, but it looks like a pretty safe bet Lee County is to be jettisoned from the whimsical (sometimes left-leaning) NC 2nd Congressional District and into the Piedmont Triad area which traditionally has been more moderate to right in its preferences.

A public hearing is slated to occur by video-teleconference on July 7th from 3PM to 9PM.  Citizens interested in speaking for up to 5 minutes at one of the seven sites across NC may register on-line to do so.  Citizens are allowed to use maps, papers, and charts as they desire to help illustrate their concerns and issues.  The web address for registering to attend and speak is:

About James Madison

I was the fourth president of these United States. My wife Dolley and I are greatly disturbed with the erosion of your liberties and the encroachment of the present federal, state, and local governments. I was an original member of the Democratic-Republican Party in this country and I would welcome a return to the conservative values that united Democrats and Republicans in my day. Let's start with putting God back in our lives and our government so He will richly bless our endeavors in Lee County. Let's force our elected officials be more transparent and accountable to the electorate in fiscal and social matters. I look forward to hearing your ideas about these matters and others that are on your hearts and minds. Thank You for participating!

4 and 12 look like they are drawn to appease a certain segment of our population. Why? 3 is too big and drawn very suspiciously.

Wow I thought district 4 was a great gerrymander until PH mentioned district 12 (thanks PH I missed it) It even has an island stuck off in district 6 and cuts district 9 into two! These must be “minority-majority” districts mandated by the feds. I wonder if you get a fuel allowance to run in and represent these districts?

Does it look to anyone else that a small sliver of Lee County is now in David Price’s district? It seems to me Brad Miller’s gerrymander was swapped to make a pretty safe Price seat an absolute lock and make Miller and Mike McIntyre both more vulnerable. I prefer an independent commission drawing lines, but wow, that belongs in the redistricting hall of fame. District 12 looks pretty much the same to me.

Also I think 3 looks bigger than it is because the artist filled in all of the sounds. Those are some low population counties and it takes a lot of them to get to 735,000.
