Fact- the citizens of the 2nd Congressional District of North Carolina are poorly represented in the Congress. With each passing month it becomes ever more apparent just how inept Representative Bob Etheridge is in every aspect of his job; most specifically his voting record. That voting record provides the stimulus for this article. I could wax eloquently for many pages were time and space not limited. But I will merely summarize some of the more egregious of his votes and illustrate just how counter-productive they have been for our electorate.
While most of America knows about the arrogance of Mr. Etheridge from his viral “Tell Me Who You Are?” video on YouTube, we citizens of NC-02 know him for his liberal voting record over the past 13+ years. The abbreviated discussions that follow are all from this, the 111th Congress.
In the beginning…Obama, Reid, and Pelosi created HR-1 (the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009), and they saw that it was good. Loyal liberal Bob Etheridge dutifully obliged with his “aye” vote, and just like that, our children and grand-children were saddled wtih over $860 billion in debt. Yesterday, July 14, 2010, Vice President Biden announced that the stimulus and recovery activities brought about by this bill have “saved or created” between 2.5 and 3.6 million jobs- which most of us have a very hard time believing. These are big numbers, even for a former Secretary of the Treasury (as is yours truly). Still, my trusty calculator tells me that spending equates to at least $239,444, or as much as $344,800 per person (if it was the lower number of saved jobs). That’s amazing. Why not just send 3 million unemployed people checks for a quarter million each?
Even more amazing is this chart created using the administration’s own (very conservative) unemployment numbers from Jan 2007 to the present. Obama took office about halfway along on this chart (Jan 2009). Note the red star which is the point in time the stimulus took effect. These numbers tell a different story than VP Biden would have you believe. From the time the stimulus went into effect, net job loss was about 500,000 jobs; hardly the 2.5 to 3.6 million saved or created jobs the administration claims. Etheridge’s vote was for a broken policy and ill-conceived measures for creating jobs. Despite the lies, his support for ARRA actually burdens generations to follow with debt and does little or nothing to create jobs.
On March 21, 2010, Etheridge voted with the liberals in Congress for H.R. 3200, affectionately known as Obama-care. Most of the nation’s healthcare and financial experts agree that, despite any potential improvements in healthcare this bill might avail, it is a job-crushing bill, passed in a time where jobs were desperately needed. The only jobs created or enhanced under Obama-care are those in the federal bureaucracy.
On June 26, 2010, Pelosi-led liberals in the House prevailed in a close 219-212 vote on the controversial H.R. 2454 Waxman-Markey Cap and Trade bill. Guess who cast one of the decisive votes in support of Madam Pelosi? Yep, our boy Bobby. Despite the fact 39 Democrats broke ranks from Pelosi and voted their constituents’ wishes (including North Carolina’s own Representatives Kissell and McIntyre), loyal Bob stayed the course with Pelosi and helped her move this bill over to the Senate. If it ever gets passed, this bill will most certainly send millions of U.S. jobs overseas and end any hopes of us ever becoming energy independent.
We can join Nancy Pelosi in thanking Bobby boy for his help on that one.
Etheridge was just as dependable to the liberals in voting for H.R. 4173, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act that just this month was enacted into law. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce claimed this bill created a “tsunami of new rules” that will “perpetuate uncertainty” in a time we all need a little stability in the economy. Even the bill’s sponsor, Senator Dodd, claimed “No one will know until this is actually in place how it will work.” The CBO says it will increase our long-term debt by over $5B. It certainly will diminish the creation of new financial sector jobs and reduce the profitability of many companies.
The real kicker for our boy Bob occurred this week, right here in Lee County. Our esteemed Congressman held a short press conference, gripping and grinning with Parkdale executives about 20 or so jobs made possible by H.R. 4437 (the Hiring Act), which Etheridge sponsored. Funny, I didn’t remember seeing any news about that bill being signed into law. A quick check of the online resources showed that H.R. 4437 was still in a House committee, with little chance of ever being enacted. At last update, this bill didn’t even have any co-sponsors. So, how is it that Etheridge can come into Lee County and crow about enacting legislation to create jobs, when he has done just the opposite?!? Come November, will you hold him responsible for his actions and his lies? Even better, take pen in hand and write our boy Bob a sharply worded letter or two telling him just how disappointed you are with our high (12.3% and growing) unemployment in the county and with his lies about creating and saving jobs.
